Greek crisis: Guy Verhofstadt turns his fire on Alexis Tsipras

I have, in the past, noted my view of Guy Verhofstadt, the Leader of the Liberal Group in the European Parliament, as a passionate European, and his not entirely warm relationship with Nigel Farage. But, in fairness, his passion has wider application.

Yesterday, the Greek Prime Minister came to the European Parliament and Guy took the opportunity to offer Mr Tsipras a little advice...

  1. It seems to me that while international creditors are obsessed with mass privatisation as the way out for Greece, Guy Verhofstadt puts his finger on the real problems when he says: “From the Greeks we need to see concrete proposals; a roadmap for legislation with hard end dates; transformation of the public sector and the public banks; opening professions that are currently closed for the young Greeks; and above all a clear plan to end the privileges of the ship owners, the orthodox church, the military, the Greek islands and especially the political parties. Because Syriza is also profiting from these privileges.” I would only add that SMEs are not blameless when it comes to tax evasion.
